PESTILENT: Chapter 15 - The Precious Coin

PESTILENT
Chapter 15
The Precious Coin

On his deathbed, the old man, with a frail voice, looked at Frank and finally revealed the reason he needed the precious coin. He wanted to sell it to buy a plane ticket. He spoke of his longing to see his childhood home in Greece one last time before his battle with thyroid cancer would claim his life. His eyes were filled with the pain of unfulfilled dreams, and he shared the story of his cherished memories, hoping that Frank would understand the significance of the coin he had. However, Frank, fearful of the consequences and his own past misdeeds, maintained his lie, not disclosing the true whereabouts of the coin, as the thought of the old man involving the police haunted him, knowing he had taken more from him. Tragically, the old man passed away before getting a chance to retrieve his precious coin and fulfill his dream.

Eleven years later, in a tent provided by Norman, Frank, currently sober but battling his addiction, found himself in a moment of reflection. Norman handed him some food and water, a simple yet vital gesture. Frank accepted the provisions with a nod of gratitude, appreciating the practical help. It was at that moment that Frank felt compelled to share with Norman the recent regret that weighed on his conscience.

"You know, it's one of those moments that keeps haunting me. That precious coin... I should've given it back to the old man, the one it truly belonged to before he passed away. He had been so kind to me when I had nothing, offering me food and shelter even when he had so little himself. That coin... it was more than just a piece of metal to him. It held memories of his home, his past, and his dreams. And what did I do? I kept it out of fear, afraid that he might involve the police, afraid that I'd lose my freedom." Tears welled up in Frank's eyes as he continued to speak, his voice quivering with the weight of his remorse. "Now he's gone, and I can't make it right. It's one of my biggest regrets, and it's like a heavy chain around my neck... I wish I could turn back time, go back to that moment when I chose to hold onto that coin instead of returning it to him."

Later, as a token of his gratitude for Norman's kindness, Frank presented him with a $10 1920 S Indian Head Gold Eagle coin, carefully encased in a protective coin slab. Frank urged Norman to keep the coin, hoping that it would help him release any lingering regrets from the loss of the $150K precious coin.

Norman sat at Madeline's desk, his gaze fixed on the window, but he couldn't help but glance down at the precious coin from Frank's friend protected by a coin capsule as it shimmered in the sunlight in his hand. With a sense of reminiscence, he gently placed it in front of a 4 by 6 photo frame featuring a picture of him and Madeline at a Renaissance fair in Santa Cruz, a place that held memories of their life together.

At that time, Norman was employed as a full-time custodian at San Jose State University, and it was now his lunch break, providing him with the opportunity to delve into his hobby as a music producer. He carefully unpacked his trusted PC laptop, a set of studio headphones, a portable condenser microphone with noise cancellation, and an audio interface from his backpack. Each piece had been acquired through refurbishments or from Craigslist listings around the Bay Area. Despite a few scratches on the laptop and interface, they performed flawlessly, as if they were brand new.

Norman's preferred creative tool was always Fruity Loops Studio, and most of his tracks found their way onto SoundCloud, which is a music social network. While he primarily focused on the Lo-Fi and Downtempo genres, today, he has a desire to explore new possibilities.

    His co-worker Mateo had...

His name is Doctor Hans Muller, also known as Doctor Murder. Who traveled the world until he formulated a formula to bring the dead back to life. Unfortunately, the formula failed miserably and instead turned them into monsters. Muller went crazy and sold the formula to an eccentric general who had a problem controlling his people. The general wanted the deadly recipe to be much more effective so that he could spread the virus more quickly and lethally. However, to do so, they had to hide the experiment in a more secretive location, away from secret agents. The place they chose is a remote place called Stellarville.

A self-edited version sample of my first manuscript for a Zombie Apocalypse novel, currently at Chapter 23 out of 27. It follows a similar writing style to Chapter 15, except for the intense and frightening aspects of the story. I'm optimistic that a Traditional Publisher will find the story appealing and choose to publish it worldwide, including other planets, with potential success that could attract the attention of Film Producers.

Thus far, the narrative has exceeded my expectations, and even if it doesn't land a traditional publishing deal, I wouldn't mind self-publishing it. I've found the story to be engaging, and I believe it has the potential to captivate readers. On a lighter note, I'm not entertaining any paranoia, and there's certainly the truth to the idea that Reptilians are conspiring against VC Writes. That's just a playful thought. I am just kidding, dudes lol. In reality, the story stands on its own merits and is quite compelling, homies.
