Grocery Adventure of September 14, 2023
I didn't know that Saluyot was called Jute Leaves until a few days ago. I had been searching the internet for a local source, and I always ended up at the same Filipino mini market. They usually have Saluyot leaves in bundles inside boxes, but it would be a waste of gas to drive there only to find out that they are sold out.
Now that I know the English name, Jute Leaves, I'm pretty sure that the local Asian market will have a bunch of frozen ones. I think Jute Leaves might be more popular in other Asian communities, since it's common for Pinoys to rely on fresh leaves only.
My aunt is one of those people who always giveaway Saluyot leaves and then add them to our vegetable stew. We ran out of them recently, and I've been craving the dish. It's healthy and goes well with fried fish. The dish is called Inabraw, a vegetable stew with fried or grilled fish. Jute Leaves are a must-have ingredient, even if you're not adding fish.
Anyway, I went to the local Asian market on my day off, and sure enough, they had piles of Jute Leaves in the freezer.
Jute is a leafy vegetable that is commonly found in the tropics and subtropical regions. In Asia and Africa, Ewedu, also known as Jute Leaves or Corchorus Olitorius, is a leafy green vegetable commonly found in West Africa, particularly in Nigeria. Jute leaves are known as EWEDU in Yoruba, Lalo in Hausa, and AYOYO in Ghana. It is a popular ingredient in many traditional dishes and is highly nutritious. Jute Leaves are used for food and are durable, eco-friendly fiber. The leaves measure between 6 and 10 cm long and are between 3.4 and 5cm broad. It has a slightly bitter taste but has excellent nutritional value. In this piece, here are the health benefits of the Jute Leaves:
-Internal bleeding
-Eye Health
-Restless leg
-Supports cell growth
-Fight off the flu
-Reduces cholesterol levels
-Cancer
-Teeth and gum health
-Improved skin and hair health

Molokhia, also Mulukhia, is a green soup made from minced Jews/Jute mallow leaves cooked in broth. This is the Egyptian Molokhia with all its tips and tricks from the grandma's kitchen.

At Lion's Asian Market. The freezer aisle looks gloomy. I like it, other than the worse ratings and reviews about this old place. In addition, the line is shorter, with friendly old ladies at the register. As far as the bad reputations, I like reading them on Yelp.
Inside the freezer are the Saluyot Leaves or Jute (Jew) Leaves. Product of the Philippines.
Ah look! Across the vegie freezer are Mochies! Hi, moochi-moochi! Some are open since the freezer isles are dark and gloomy; some were eating desserts here for free.
Buying 3 of these fresh small Tilapia.
Almost gone. Buying 3 of these Stripe Bass.
This is part of the Inabraw Stew.
Re-washing the fish. Although, they had been been cut and cleaned for free at Lions.
Mother is doing a final inspection of the fish and preparing to cook the Inabraw. She inquires about a Pinay who knows about fish to go along at places like Lion, lol.
These are ready to get fried.
Feeling a bit tired today.
The Mochi is not bad. It's melted from leaving it too long in the garage to unfreeze a little. I chose the vanilla over the Macha. Not because I am cheap, but Macha doesn't go well with my blood thinner medicine, although I love Macha.
Saving the Mochie for next time before my blood sugar spike up.
As I wait for mother to fry the fish, I have to go back out for the week's apocalypse grocery list.

So much selection of Naans. I'll just take this one.
Three of these eggplants. Brush with Olive Oil before Air Frying them. Eat with soy sauce and rice. Even with fish sauce or fish paste with a bit of lime juice.
They also have all sorts of fruit and veggie remedies. I bought the Jamun Juice, supposedly suitable for Diabetics.
This is one of my favorite area and check out the price?
I have a giant hand but just one Big Samosa. No sweet chutney sauce.
This would be my first Samosa burger. The bread is not bad.
I also went to Safeway for garlic bread and soy milk. However, Safeway doesn't carry this cerial, which my brother shared with me, and I like it. "They have them at Target," he says.

Home finally, and the fish are fried. Dinner already started and bro loves the fried Stripe Bass.
It's not as pretty looking but this is the Inabraw Stew with fried Tilapias.
Mission Accomplished. Fried fish is excellent with Mang Tomas sauce.
