The Crazies

The Crazies is a 2010 horror-thriller film directed by Breck Eisner. It is a remake of George A. Romero's 1973 film of the same name. The story is set in a small town where a toxin contaminates the water supply, causing the residents to go insane and turn violent. The film follows the struggles of the town's sheriff and his wife as they try to survive and escape the chaos. It's known for its tense and suspenseful atmosphere, as well as its exploration of the breakdown of society in a crisis.

Zombies with guns? Well, not exactly reanimated corpses, but rather living beings infected with a virus that compels them to kill each other, ultimately resembling zombies, regardless of their previous personalities. It all began when some kind of biological weapon contaminated a military plane, causing it to crash-land in a small town's lake, contaminating the water supply. As people drank the water, they initially developed Alzheimer's symptoms and slowly transformed into toxic individuals with a zombie-like urge to kill.

The military personnel had no choice but to eradicate the entire town, leaving only two survivors: a wife doctor and a chief police husband. They were once friends with the first strange, toxic guy the chief police husband encountered at the beginning, whom he had to kill. The wife doctor was in denial about her friend being one of the toxic men until she had a toxic man as a patient. Still, she believed he was just mentally ill until he horrifically burned his own family alive.

The wife doctor skepticism persisted until the military and scientists, wearing protective toxic suits, suspected her of being a toxic woman but she was only having a fever because she's in an early stage of being pregnant. Her husband saved her, alongside his police partner, who later turned into a toxic man. The couple managed to steal a big truck from a group of toxic men armed with guns and fled their contaminated town just before a nuclear bomb was dropped.

It's undeniably a crazy scenario, but no zombies running around in a mass. It's still crazy, though, which is why the title is The Crazies. The unique twist on zombies and the creepy drama set it apart. While it may not evoke the same emotions as a typical Korean zombie drama, it's deserving of a thumbs-up.

I think there will be The Crazies 2 from Breck Eisner. I still have to check out the original The Crazies 1973 by George A. Romero.
