Alien: Romulus

Alien: Romulus is a 2024 science fiction horror film directed by Fede Álvarez and produced by Ridley Scott. The screenplay was written by Álvarez and Rodo Sayagues. Set in the Alien universe, the film follows a group of space colonists who stumble upon a derelict space station while searching for cryo-chambers. Their mission quickly turns into a terrifying ordeal when they discover the station is infested with deadly xenomorphs. The film harkens back to the classic horror elements of the original Alien, focusing on suspense, atmosphere, and the relentless pursuit of a deadly creature.

Rain, a fierce and resourceful member of the colony, becomes the de facto leader after the crew's decimation. She exhibits a level of courage and responsibility reminiscent of Ripley, fearlessly facing the xenomorphs and devising strategies to outsmart the Aliens. Just not as tall as Ripley; Ripley is 5'10" while Rain is 4'10", I believe.

H.R. Giger's iconic Alien design remains as captivating as ever. The biomechanical creature's grotesque appearance, with its undulating form and sharp, phallic appendages, continues to evoke a sense of dread and fascination in audiences. Giger's masterful blend of organic and mechanical elements has solidified the Alien as one of the most enduring and terrifying monsters in cinematic history.

In "Alien: Romulus," Kay's monster baby, known as "The Beast," is definitely not an H.R. Giger masterpiece. These generic beast babies, while unsettling, evoke a bit of laughter due to their more conventional design compared to the franchise's usual intricate creatures. I guess these characters are meant for amusement. It's always fascinating to be surprised by the way human genes are involved in generic homologous recombination. I suppose "The Beasts" are meant to replace the human race. Imagine a world with no more sorrows or weaknesses, but instead, a beast that is much stronger than any other predatory creature.

Overall, I liked the movie, although it was a bit cliché with the jump scares, and the development of the creatures seemed rushed, starting with the character being impregnated by a facehugger. The younger audience might not care about these aspects, but for those who were 13 years old in the late 1970s, these details matter.

One thing that fascinated me in the movie was the android’s complex behavior, which I had never seen before. Additionally, the gravity generators that were periodically activated due to the age of the mothership were also interesting.

My first experience with Alien was in 1988, watching it on analogue television. Back in junior high, I also met a friend who was a fan of the movie; he is now a comic book artist and the creator of Invader Zim. While I’m not competing with Johnen Vasquez, I have my own perspective on science fiction, though we share the same foundational inspiration from H.R. Giger and Ridley Scott.
